Mackerel, King (Scomberomorus cavalla)
Also known as: Cavalla, Cero, Kingfish, Kings, Sierra
Source: Wild-caught in Gulf waters from West Florida to Texas

King mackerel are one of the most commonly caught species off the southern United States, especially Florida. This large, aggressive, richly flavored fish is popular with commercial and recreational fishermen alike.

King mackerel is a migratory species—they migrate to the northern part of their range in the summer and to the southern part in the winter, traveling long distances and moving between the Gulf and South Atlantic. King mackerel are mostly found offshore in federal waters. Federal authorities including NOAA Fisheries and the Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic Fishery Management Councils are responsible for monitoring and managing these fisheries resources. Any applicable state management measures are fairly consistent with federal measures—some states automatically adopt federal regulations; others have separate regulations. State and federal enforcement agents partner to enforce fisheries laws and regulations. The states also help collect data on king mackerel commercial and recreational fisheries, providing important information to support management of this valuable resource.

For more information about king mackerel, including its status, biological information, and a description of the fishery and how it’s managed, see NOAA’s FishWatch.gov.
